Who we are
EPIC offers supported social recreation to neurodivergent teens and young adults in a safe and natural, community-oriented environment.
Neurodivergent refers to developmental differences such as autism, ADHD, OCD, dyslexia, language differences, sensory processing differences, and more.
Our mission is to build and deepen relational connection in neurodivergent children, teens, young adults, and their caregivers through play, trust, and self-expression.
Meet the Founders
Kaary Ogard and Kim Wagaman founded EPIC in 2011 as a creative response to the need for friendship, support, and solidarity amongst neurodiverse teens and young adults. The ever-evolving group is community oriented and sustained. Kaary is a speech pathologist specializing in autism and neuro- diversity since 1998. Kim has specialized in coping, regulation, and social relationships with the neurodiverse community since 1995. She also teaches yoga. Their unique developmental approach to therapy is child/person-centered and relationship-based.
Why Relational Connection Matters
Relational connection is authentic, reciprocal, and naturally rewarding. Research shows that relational connectivity leads to:
Increased mental stability
Balanced sociability
Stronger family connectivity
A relational approach recognizes that the self cannot develop in isolation. Many neurodivergent young people experience relational challenges and limited exposure to positive, reciprocal peer relationships. Our relational approach emphasizes quality contact and meaningful interaction through play and process with facilitators, peer mentors, and group members.
Our Approach
Within the EPIC community, where neurodivergence is accepted and understood, members can safely explore new and formative social experiences. Positive peer and mentor relationships fostered through play support:
Self-confidence
Self-awareness
Social relationships
Communication
Emotional regulation
Self-expression
Self-advocacy
Empathy
Our format includes play-based events, games, and activities (many outdoors in nature) along with opportunities for personal sharing and active listening. The goal is to create an environment of mutual support where relationships are built and strengthened through shared experience.
